Progress Report 21 December 2017
Wednesday
A day of intense inactivity. I saw a gynaecologist who examined me regarding the vaginal bleeding. He said he felt polyps but nothing else. He wants to do an ultrasound and look for a possible fistula. A nurse came by later with a swab kit and a urine collection jar.
I saw Mihir, the dr from Steel’s team who explained that he was still trying to get the MRI done, but it was the MRI people holding it up - they didn’t like the nerve stimulator.
I was promised a visit from the pain team but they didn’t arrive. It was explained they were contacting my other drs.
I was promised a visit from the anaesthetic team but they didn’t arrive.
I forgot to say that I saw an occupational therapist on Tuesday who discussed how I would get around when I went home. I told her I lived in a nursing home and I would have all the help I needed.
I was moved from my single room just before dinner to a shared 4 bed ward with three males
Thursday
A day of activity. I struggled to get going and get some help getting myself together. I got an air bed. I was sent for an ultrasound. At 11am I changed rooms again to a 2 male and another female ward. The pain specialist came to see me and discussed using methadone as long term pain relief and increased my endone to 15mg 4 hourly. Very good idea. Another dr from Steel’s team came to discuss anaesthesia and its risks with me. I had a lung function test. I had an ECG. I was sent for an echocardiogram in the private clinic. Getting back I found I had missed lunch and I finally got a sandwich at 2pm. I was told surgery still on for Friday afternoon.
At 19:15 Dr Steel came by. Explained that all was set for surgery next day, however anaesthetic team decided I was not fit for surgery, despite not meeting me. He wanted to go ahead but has decided not to, not because of anaesthetic team but because of a bad feeling about the Christmas period (only a skeleton staff), and that he needs more time to prepare - eg the position of the nerve stimulator wires worries him, as he may damage them during surgery.
He has decided to transfer me to private hospital tomorrow to address some of my current problems then send me home until a few days prior to the surgery date which will be at the end of January. Prior to surgery drs will look at making me more fit for surgery.
